M1V is an MPEG-1 Video Stream. It contains only video related data. MPEG-1 video stream files are normally destined to be multiplexed (muxed), which is the process of adding audio data and perhaps other streams such as subtitles, before use. MPEG-1 stream files are created by demultiplexing (demuxing) an existing MPEG-1, or by converting another video format to MPEG-1. The file extension M1V is used for files that contain both MPEG-1 video and audio streams, a use that may surprise those who expect only a video stream.
